VIRGINIA LETITIA CALIN

Necrology: Virginia Letitia Calin, the Mother of our Dean, Fr. Christopher Calin



Virginia Letitia Calin (nee Oprea), 90, formerly of Chicago Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2014, at House of Loreto Nursing Home in Canton, Ohio.

Virginia was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1923. The widow of Dan N. Calin, who passed away in 2006, Virginia is predeceased by her sister Pauline Voishan of Avalon, California; and survived by sister in law Mary Jane Calin of Boca Raton, FL; son Andrew J. Calin (Debbie) of Antioch, Illinois; daughter Paula Ann Treff (The Very Reverend George); and son The Right Reverend Christopher Calin of New York City; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was baptized at St Elias Church in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. She met Dan N. Calin on Valentine's Day, 1953 in Los Angeles, CA, and the couple were married on April 25, that year in Chicago, IL where they made their home. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church in Chicago, IL where she served as a member of the Choir, and an officer of the Ladies' auxiliary "Credinta", the Romanian-American Memorial AMVETS Post #109, and the Romanian Society "Speranta-Emigrantul", until relocating to Canton, Ohio in 2006. She worked from 1975 until retirement at JC Penny & Company. Virginia also served on the national Boards of ARFORA Association of Romanian Orthodox Ladies' Auxiliaries of America, the Orthodox Brotherhood and the Union & League Romanian Societies of America and a volunteer and "Dorm Mom" at Vatra Camps for many years. She was a devoted supporter of Archbishop Valerian D. Trifa and the Romanian Heritage Center named after him, the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, and the Orthodox Church in America.

Visitation from 5:00pm - 8:00pm and Funeral Services at 7:00pm will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at St. George the Great Martyr Romanian Orthodox Church 144 30th St NW, Canton, OH, and burial on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at 1:00pm next to her beloved late husband Dan at St. Mary's Cemetery/Vatra Romaneasca in Grass Lake, MI. Officiating clergy: The Very Reverend George Treff and The Right Reverend Christopher Calin. 

May the good Lord rest her soul with the righteous, and may her memory be eternal. Bunul Dumnezeu sau odihneasca cu dreptii si vesnica ei pominire!
