The Small Paraklesis is often celebrated during the first two weeks of August before the Dormition fast, while the Great Paraklesis may be used in times of special need. The service emphasizes our dependence on Mary's maternal care and powerful intercession.

A service of prayer and supplication for specific intentions, often requesting divine help or giving thanks. Molebens can be offered for various needs: healing, safe travel, blessing of homes, or thanksgiving for answered prayers. These services demonstrate the Orthodox understanding that all aspects of life can be brought before God in prayer and that divine help is available for every human need.

The Russian monk who brought Orthodoxy to Alaska and was the first Orthodox saint canonized in America. Celebrated on December 13th, Herman arrived in Alaska in 1794 and spent over 40 years ministering to native Alaskans. He defended them against exploitation and established schools and orphanages on Spruce Island.

A service of remembrance for the departed, asking for God's mercy on their souls and offering prayers for their eternal rest. Often called Panikhida in Slavic traditions, these services may be held at funerals, on memorial days, or on the anniversary of death. The service expresses the Orthodox belief in the communion of saints and our ongoing prayer relationship with the departed.

The 4th-century Bishop of Trimythous in Cyprus, known for his simplicity and miraculous powers. Celebrated on December 12th, Spyridon was a shepherd who became a bishop and attended the First Ecumenical Council. His relics remain incorrupt and are venerated especially in Greece. He's invoked for help with financial difficulties and is patron of potters.

The sacrament of reconciliation through which the faithful confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution. Also called the sacrament of repentance or penance, confession restores the baptismal purity lost through sin and reconciles the penitent with God and the Church. The penitent stands before an icon of Christ while confessing to the priest, who acts as a witness and minister of God's forgiveness. The priest then covers the penitent's head with his epitrachelion (stole) and pronounces the prayer of absolution.

The "falling asleep" and assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Preceded by a two-week fast, this feast on August 15th celebrates Mary's death and her bodily assumption. Orthodox theology teaches that Mary experienced death but was immediately raised and taken to heaven, where she intercedes for all Christians.

The miraculous image of Christ that appeared on cloth, also called the Mandylion. Celebrated on August 16th, this icon was sent by Christ himself to King Abgar of Edessa. According to tradition, Christ pressed a cloth to his face, leaving his image imprinted. This acheiropoietos (not-made-by-hands) icon represents Christ's divine nature and the power of his image.

The sacrament of marriage, uniting a man and woman in lifelong union blessed by God. The Orthodox wedding service consists of two parts: the Betrothal (exchange of rings) and the Crowning (placement of crowns on the couple's heads). The crowns symbolize both the glory and martyrdom of marriage, as well as the couple's status as king and queen of their domestic church. The couple drinks from the common cup and processes around the analogion three times. Marriage is understood as an icon of Christ's union with the Church.

The beginning of the Orthodox liturgical year on September 1st. Also called the Indiction, this feast marks the start of the annual cycle of feasts and fasts. Many Orthodox churches hold special services with prayers for the new year, blessing of schools, and remembrance of God's creation. It emphasizes new beginnings and spiritual renewal.

The 20th-century bishop and wonderworker known for his humility and miraculous healings. Celebrated on November 9th, Nectarios founded a convent on Aegina and was known for his simple lifestyle despite his theological learning. Many miracles have occurred through his intercession, especially healings from cancer. He represents modern Orthodox sanctity and the power of humble service.
